History`s Shadow

David Maisel was born in 1961 in New York (USA) and currently lives in San Francisco. He is visual artist and photographer, graduated from the School of Design at Harvard (Cambridge), later he studied at California College of the Arts (San Francisco).

Inspired by a x-ray machine at the Getty Institute, Maisel started to look for artifact's x-rays through the archives of museums, uncovering these ghostly emanations of light, and then scanning, re-photographing and  manipulating them digitally to later present them as History's Shadow project.

Maisel's latest book History's Shadow conglomerate 21 pictures (
40"x30", edition of seven). Like many of his previous projects,History's Shadow illustrates a keen interest in the manner in which photography can combine art, science and a sense of humanity.

Seminar

26-28 September 2013 – University of Illinois at Chicago
Invited Speakers:
Jeremy Butterfield (Cambridge)
Bianca Dittrich (Perimeter Institute)
Nick Huggett (UIC)
Christian Wüthrich (UCSD)
+ others to be announced

The investigation of quantum gravity has been central to theoretical physics for at least two decades, but philosophy has only engaged with this field in very a fragmentary way. The purpose of this meeting is bring together people with research agendas in quantum gravity, to present their work and develop some common understanding of philosophical topics, questions, approaches, and solutions. Because the field is very new, many of those involved are near or recent PhDs – along with established scholars, they are encouraged to attend, to share their work or learn.
